Natural Treatment for Bone Spurs – A Mineral Approach

Bone spurs (also known as osteophytes) are one of those conditions that can cause significant pain and discomfort, yet are often dismissed as something you simply have to live with. In my practice as a naturopath, I have seen some truly remarkable results working with clients who suffer from spurs — and the key has been looking at mineral balance in the body.

What Are Bone Spurs?

Bone spurs are small bony projections that develop along the edges of bones, most commonly in the feet (especially the heel), spine, shoulders, hips and knees. They often form in response to inflammation, joint damage or prolonged pressure on a bone.

Symptoms can include:

  • Sharp, stabbing pain — especially in the heel when walking
  • Stiffness and reduced range of motion in joints
  • Tenderness around the affected area
  • Numbness or tingling if a spur is pressing on a nerve

The Mineral Connection

What many people don’t realise is that bone spurs are often a sign of mineral imbalance in the body — particularly an excess of calcium being deposited in the wrong places, combined with deficiencies in the minerals that help regulate where calcium goes.

In my experience, addressing the following key minerals can make a significant difference to spur symptoms:

  • Magnesium — works alongside calcium and helps prevent calcium from being deposited in soft tissues and joints. Many Australians are deficient in magnesium without knowing it.
  • Vitamin K2 — directs calcium to the bones and teeth where it belongs, and away from arteries and soft tissues.
  • Vitamin D3 — essential for calcium absorption and bone health. Works synergistically with K2.
  • Silica — supports bone matrix formation and connective tissue health.
  • Zinc — important for bone repair and reducing inflammation.

Practitioner Range Products

In my clinic I use practitioner-only supplements — professional grade products that are significantly more bioavailable and therapeutic than over-the-counter options. These are carefully selected and dosed based on each individual’s needs, which is why the results I see in clinic can be so profound.

If you are suffering from bone spurs and would like to explore a natural, mineral-based approach, I would love to help. A consultation will allow me to assess your individual mineral status and create a targeted protocol just for you.

What You Can Do at Home

Alongside a targeted supplement protocol, the following can support your recovery:

  • Anti-inflammatory diet — reduce sugar, processed foods and alcohol which drive inflammation
  • Increase magnesium-rich foods — leafy greens, nuts, seeds, legumes and dark chocolate
  • Stay hydrated — filtered water supports mineral transport throughout the body
  • Gentle movement — walking, swimming and stretching help maintain joint mobility
  • Epsom salt foot soaks — magnesium sulphate absorbs through the skin and can relieve heel spur pain
